Mr. Hempey is the managing partner at Hempey & Meyers LLP. He has been practicing law since 1990. He practices civil litigation and criminal defense. He has defended thousands of serious criminal charges, ranging from white-collar financial crimes to DUI to murder. Among recent results are a million dollar verdict in a negligence in escrow case, reversal a murder conviction in the Hawaii Supreme Court, creating precedent regarding contract litigation in the Hawaii Supreme Court, and numerous acquittals in cases in Kauai’s trial Courts. Mr. Hempey has acted as a judge pro-tempore in the California Municipal Court, teaches OVUII investigations to Kauai police recruits, is on the Board of Directors of Malama Kauai nonprofit, and acts as an arbitrator for the 5th Circuit Court in negligence cases. He has battled numerous pro-bono cases involving civil rights, corruption and whistleblower, or on behalf of the common environment or the rights of Native Hawaiian people. He practices in the State trial and appeals courts. Dan is also former public defender in Montgomery County, Maryland. He has won numerous appeals in the Hawaii Supreme Court and Intermediate Court of Appeals. He has represented multinational corporations, public interest groups and individuals in a wide array of serious civil and criminal cases.
